Getting charged with a DUI the day after you drank

On Behalf of | Jul 12, 2021 | DUI - Drunk Driving |

You may think that you are sober enough to drive the day after you’ve had a heavy night of drinking. However, it’s possible to get charged with a DUI in Oklahoma the day after you drank alcohol.

How it happens

It can take a while for alcohol to leave your system. If you drank a lot at a 10 p.m. dinner, then there’s a good chance that you won’t be sober enough to safely get on the road at 8 a.m. to drive to work. It has to do with several factors, such as how much you had to drink, your age and your weight. If you do get pulled over the day after you drink, you might face the exact same DUI charges that you would have received if you had gotten pulled over the night before.

How to avoid it

No one wants to get a DUI conviction as it can have some devastating consequences. You can keep a DUI from happening the day after you drink by not assuming that you are sober enough to drive. If you plan on drinking a lot, don’t get behind the wheel of a car for 24 hours. It’s better to call a taxi or get a ride from a friend if you need to go to somewhere. Don’t assume that a few hours of sleep, a big meal or a few cups of coffee will bring your blood alcohol content down low enough that you can safely drive.

Getting charged with a DUI the day after drinking does happen. Fortunately, it is avoidable in most cases if you take the right precautions.
